FARM BUSINESS INCUBATOR
Ready to start a farm of your own? Join the Commons.
The Seed Farm's Agricultural Business Incubator was created to meet the needs of new farmers who did not grow up on farms and therefore lack access to land, equipment, and capital.
On our 42-acre site, we provide access to land, infrastructure, equipment, and technical assistance in order to break down the barriers to farm entry. We can help connect you with service providers, new markets, even promotional opportunities while you build a solid foundation and grow your farm business.
The Farm Business Incubator program is available to new farmers who can demonstrate adequate farming experience and solid marketing and business plans. Participants applying to the program must be ready to become small business owners as much as farmers.
Applicants must have extensive gardening experience or some farming experience in order to start hand-scale farming on small plots (1/8-1/4 acre), with monthly check-ins and technical assistance. Beginning farmers who have completed land-based apprenticeships or internships and have 3+ full seasons of farming can apply to farm on a larger scale.
Incubating farms operate as independent farm businesses and are responsible for all elements of their business, including employees, insurance, certifications, licenses, quality control, customer service, and more.
Resources available to incubating farm businesses include:
1/8 – 5 acres of land per farm
heated greenhouse
2-wheel and 4-wheel tractors and implements
variety of hand tools and seeders
wash/pack facilities and walk-in coolers
access to water and irrigation system
dry storage space
farm stand
unheated high tunnel
group order opportunities
technical assistance
ongoing training opportunities
